GATI is a Sanskrit word with many meanings - for example - going, moving, and the speed of the soul’s course through numerous forms of life. The word is used in Buddhist teachings, and therefore Gati also exists in Thai as many in Thailand, like Nicha, grow up with Sanskrit prayers while practicing Buddhism. Nicha reflects on how in Buddhist teachings one learns to respect their body, their space, and that of others. She observes how people have different ways of honoring, feeling, and moving their bodies. Nicha sees a connection between the Buddhist values she grew up with and the dancer’s ability to express emotion and imagination.
GATI ( गत ) is a project that Nicha has been collecting since2017 during her time as a dancer with the Bayerisches Staatsballett in Munich. From her perspective as a dance artist, this work is inspired by dancers’ movements at a certain speed. With your naked eye at normal speeds, you might just miss out on the musculature and curved lines of the highly trained dancer artist. Nicha, through the help of her lens, offers you a chance to merge still-like clarity and movement into an emotionally charged moment. The images are painting-like. Nicha is drawn to the hues of bare skin. She wishes to show the earth tones that make up the natural human aesthetic. Accordingly, it allows her to highlight some details in the physique of the subject as well as obscuring other elements with the echoes of motion.
